Anand Kabra's show entitled 'She was so dark that she was Blue' is his best collection till date. The varying hues of mysterious rivers and reflective watery prisms united this slick presentation of autumn, resort and Indian separates seamlessly!

Thanks to new options in the market, some highly priced items that seemed like a distant dream to many Indians are now within reach. "There are so many women who always wanted to carry a luxury bag or clutch at a party or a meeting but couldn't afford it. Our service gives them the opportunity to own one and match it with their attire," said Cooki Singh, co-founder of online bag rental service www.bag4aday.com.
"The whole idea of this concept is to make luxury bags affordable to bag lovers," she said.
The online portal has as many as 24 bags of international brands Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Fendi, Jimmy Choo, Dolce and Gabbana and Just Cavalli and are planning to add more numbers and new brands also.
To borrow a bag you have to take membership and then you can avail yourself of its services.
"We have to be very careful about our members and so make it a point to screen their backgrounds very well. We are very selective about our clients and so we don't make anyone our member till we have small details about them like residential copy, verification id proof," Singh told IANS.

‘Hom’ is the company which is coming up with the undies that will meet the comfort needs of southpaws, reports the Telegraph .
Rob Faucherand, the head of men’s accessories buying at Debenhams, the department store that is stocking the pants, said: “In our view this is a vital step toward equality for left handed men. “We see no reason why an accident of birth should dictate the type of underpants you can wear for the rest of your life.”
The Hom underwear has an opening slit made horizontally underneath the waistband unlike boxer shorts, which generally have a central opening or Y-fronts and trunks that have a right-handed opening.
Faucherand added: “Switching the opening from vertical to horizontal may sound like a small step, but it’s the major breakthrough that many have been waiting for.”

Too many fashion weeks confuse buyers

The 35-year old Sabyasachi Mukherjee, regarded as the biggest name in the fashion world from this part of the country, had skipped the first edition of the KFW, held this April.

"I am not a big supporter of too many fashion weeks. If I support the KFW then what wrong have the others done? I think one is better than 20," Mukherjee said on phone from Goa, where he is busy designing clothes for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film "Guzarish".

Mukherjee also referred to the commercial angle to buttress his point. "In India we do not have as many buyers. If there are too many fashion weeks the concept will be diluted and it will also confuse the buyers," said the graduate of the National Institute of Fashion Designing in Kolkata.
Mukherjee said he is generally keeping off fashion shows this year and concentrating more on films.
However, he would give a small presentation on 10 years of Indian fashion at the Lakme fashion event in Mumbai Sep 18. "All fashion designers have been invited. I am also busy preparing for that."
One of the most admired Asian fashion designers in the West, Mukherjee said though he had never been the victim of any racial discrimination it "was a fact" that these countries promoted home-spun designers.
"In contrast, when my clothes go to these stores they are expensive because customs duty and related taxes have to be paid. So the stores favour American designers. This is business logic."
Asked about his plans for 2010, Mukherjee replied: "I will then again start doing shows."

Saris to be on centre-stage of global fashion wear

A project to put saris on the centre-stage of fashion wear has received an approval from World Bank. The five-stage plan has been implemented by Asian Heritage Foundation, will launch saris in global markets with a unified brand called JIYO!

The Asian Heritage Foundation will popularize 118 ways of sari draping, apart from imbibing the modern designs. The JIYO brand will also comprise furnishings, handicrafts, health and food products. About 20 JIYO! clusters, covering over 20,000 artisans will be set up in 4-5 states including Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Chattisgarh. The nationwide campaign that intends to bring the glory of saris back, will also involve celebrities, who will endorse the saris. The weavers will receive assistance from designers of international repute, who will polish up their skills, so that it can meet global consumer expectations.

The sari will perfectly fit in the modern scheme of fashion, pointed out, Ms. Rita Kapoor Chisti, who is an expert herself in sari making in India. While interacting with handloom weavers from traditional sari making areas in Andhra Pradesh, she said, “If somebody wants to show off, she can do it in style in saris”, but was also saddened by the extinction of the few popular sari-making crafts. The Asian Heritage Foundation also has planned out a biannual international collection of saris, named ‘1001 Saris’, along with Japan Social Development Fund (JSDF).

To attain this objective, clusters in different parts of the country will be identified by the lead teams. Indian saris have huge demand in the market, but in order to meet requirements, the designs, only need to be changed, said an expert. As part of the initiative, the foundation will work with the weavers in places recognized for designs, such as Srikalahasti, Pochampally, Uppada, Ponduru, Siddipet and Dharmavaram. Alike initiatives are also being framed out to popularize handicrafts and ethnic foods of Andhra Pradesh at national and international levels.

Ikat Weaving

Ikat is one of the styles of weaving that uses a resist dyeing process as similar to tie-dye. It uses either the warp or weft to weave a pattern or design. When both warp and weft are tie-dyed then it is called double Ikat.
In the 19th century, Bukhara and Smarkand were famous for their fine silk Ikat, while India, Japan and several South-East Asian countries have cultures with long histories of Ikat production. One cannot find double Ikat simply but still it can be found in India, Guatemala, Japan and the Indonesian islands of Bali and Kalimantan. Ikat varies wildly from country to country and region to region. Generally Ikats are symbols of status, wealth, power and prestige.
There is link between Ikat production in India and South-East Asia. Gujarati merchants brought Patola to Indonesian rulers and there this activity of making Ikat was taken over by the Dutch. The patterns in the Patola Ikat are prominently similar to the double Ikat produced in Bali, Indonesia. In Europe in Mallorca and in Spain Ikat floral patterns are used.
Making Process of Ikat
Ikat fabrics are woven by hand on narrow looms in a labor-intensive process. Thai Ikats are generally 34" to 39" wide. Plain weave Ikat fabrics have unique resist patterns so it looks the same on both sides of fabrics. There is no right or wrong side to the cloth. The Thai Ikats typically have 2" to 3" solid borders along each selvage.
The easiest way to create Ikat is to dye the warp. Before attaching the warp strings to the loom they are arranged into bundles, every bundle is tied and dyed individually, so that a pattern is visible when the loom is set up. To keep dyes from penetrating the tightly bound bundles are covered with wax. After the threads are dyed the loom is set up. The pattern is visible to the weaver when the dyed threads are used as warp. Threads can be adjusted so that they line up correctly with each other.
Generally dying the weft Ikats are used when the precision of the pattern is not the main concern, and weaving of weft Ikat is much more difficult than warp Ikat. While double Ikats are the most difficult to produce because in these warp and weft are precisely tied and dyed so that the pattern can interlock and reinforce each other when the fabric is woven. The example of most precise Ikat is the Japanese Oshima-thrice woven cloth. The warp and weft threads are used as warp to weave stiff fabric, upon which the thread for the Ikat weaving is spot-dyed, after that the mats are winded and the dyed thread is woven into Oshima cloth.

To cooperate in the field of textile related technology and promotion of the industry, an agreement has been signed between India’s leading garment export body ‘Apparel Export Promotion Council’ (AEPC) and the organization of textiles producers and machinery manufacturers ‘Taiwan Textile Federation’ (TTF). These two organizations will work collectively, in order to identify investors for setting up man-made and special fabric manufacturing units. AEPC and TTF would also work on facilitating Taiwan textile industry to set up joint ventures in India for eco-friendly and specialty apparel.

To increase India’s garment exports the industry needs to produce cotton blended as well as man-made fabric products. AEPC’s agreement with the TTF would prove to be helpful for country’s textile and garment exports. Designer Prashant Verma in his collection 'Meat' represented aesthetic concepts nurtured by the story of human courage and vitality.
Verma said that his collection put forth a compelling analysis of human aggression. He weaved together the aggression of sports and bodybuilding and the uncontrollable rage of dictators and warlords. His creations portrayed the complexities of an inner and private artistic battle.
The collections comprised of uniforms of rugby players- the thick shoulder pads, helmets, kneepads, constructed out of patent, leather, prints of football players in silk and the flowing satin robes and glittering belts of boxers.
Meanwhile designer duo Pankaj and Nidhi Ahuja swept grays and blacks away from the ramp with their colourful collection under the title 'Life in Technicolor'.
Flaming reds and potent blues, plush orchid-plums, purples and violets were used by the designers to give a new resonance to their creations of 2009.
A range of trapunto-quilted jackets (whole cloth quilting technique which produces a raised surface on the quilt), precision geometric embroideries of luscious floral, hexagon diskette-quilt capes and Russian vintage print tunics comprised the duo's collection.
With 102 designers and around 175 buyers, Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week is India's premier fashion extravaganza, which brings together the business of fashion and expert designers as well as connoisseurs of lifestyle on a common platform.

The 'Kota Doria':
'Doria' means thread. It is woven from silk yarn and cotton in a different combination of warp and weft with an exclusive check pattern in the weave itself, which is known as 'khat'. The khats are present in the basic fabric itself, and are woven in a very skillful way that the fabric looks transparent. This is a hallmark and a unique feature of the doria fabric, which has made it an exclusive handloom product.
The doria fabric can be made in a series of steps. First is the 'Pre Loom' process, where a traditional process is followed to spin the yarn. Under this process of weaving, peg warping and brush sizing is done. Rice paste and onion juice is applied to the yarn so as to make it strong. Then is the application of dyes. Dyes are mixed in proper proportion by traditional dyers to give a contemporary look to the fabrics. Mostly vegetable or vat dyes are used making the process eco friendly. The final step is 'Design and Weaving', where weaving is generally done through pit looms using the shuttle technique. The designs are made in the cloth using Jacquards, or dobbys. Dobby is used for ground motifs and pallus, while jacquards are used for making exquisite borders on the saris. This handicraft provides living for more than 2,500 weaver families working on pit hand looms.

Job losses in the textile and clothing industry are mounting with each passing week and month. If you have a short neck, invest in v-necks and wrap dresses to create the illusion of a long neck. If we have one constant gripe, it is about the shape of our bodies. Your fingers will always restlessly find their way to that offending roll of fat. If you hail from the other side of the spectrum, you will wail about being mistaken for a boy. There are no imperfections that can't be minimised or hidden if you plan your wardrobe right.
Here are the six most cringe-inducing problems and how to tackle them.

Flabby arms

If you are scared to wave goodbye because of all the jiggling that ensues in your upper arm, don't fret. Buy tops with three-quarter sleeves that don't fit too snugly Avoid sleeveless and halter neck tops like the plague as well as puff and cap sleeves that only draw attention to what you want to hide. Long or short bell sleeves that flare out near the elbow or the wrist are also a great idea. If the weather is hot, try tops with loose, diaphanous sleeves. Loose, full sleeves that gather into an elastic band near the wrist can also create the illusion of leanness because the wrist is the narrowest part of your arm.

But this means they get stuck with the baggy look. Instead, hunt in plus size stores for pants with elastic bands near the waist that will fit snugly.You also have pants with tummy trimmers stitched into them, giving you a leaner look instantly.

Bottom heavy Even though leggings are possibly the most comfortable fashion garment ever crafted, you should try stay away from them. Ditto for skinny or straight-fit jeans. If you are determined to wear them however, pair them with long, loose tunics that reach mid thigh. If you have shapely legs, opt for A-line skirts that are knee or mid-calf length. Long, flowing Victorian skirts are another op tion. However, don't buy pencil skirts that emphasise your bottom or short jackets that end right above your butt. Bell-bottom or boot cut

Boyish frame If you are too skinny and have a narrow, boyish frame, you are a perfect candidate for layering. Team bright contrasting colours together and pile on the layers to look less waif-like. You might think that baggy clothes will make you look bigger than you are but the opposite is true. Corset or tube tops, sleeveless tees, pencil skirts and skinny jeans are all things that will look great on you and draw envious glances. If you have great legs, go for shift dresses that end mid thigh. Small bust The good thing about having a small bust is that you can experiment with plunging necklines and backless dresses that need to be worn without a bra. Halter-tops and sleeveless turtlenecks are also perfect for your body type. Go strapless or off-shoulder as often as you can. Team them with shrugs and bolero jackets. Wear padded bras to go up a cup size or two.

Proponents say that fabrics made from soda bottles keep plastic out of landfills, while plants like hemp and bamboo grow quickly, don’t require heavy pesticides and are naturally antibacterial and lightweight.
But critics say that these claims don’t take into account the chemicals that are often required to process fabrics or the fact that some materials must travel thousands of fuel-guzzling miles before hitting the shelves.
And what about the plastic bags even eco-shorts come in? “Eliminating that waste would do 5,000-percent more than using organic fabrics,” said Steve Price, the chief executive of Killer Dana, a surf-wear retailer.
Dave Alban, 30, and John Hickey, 23, instructors with Florida Surf Lessons, tested five pairs of shorts. Each added a pair (by Arbor and Patagonia) to his respective wardrobe.

California Design College Goes Green With Eco and Vine

For their annual fashion event, Eco & Vine, about 20 CDC students were given the mission of creating garments that offered fashion value as well as a means to reduce their carbon footprints. The student designers set off in different directions. Some sought out vintage garments from thrift stores as well as their own closets and deconstructed and reconstructed while others made their creations from paper and plastic bags. A few went the more traditional route and used organic fabrics.
The student producers of the show also adhered to the theme by building the runway with raw canvas that would later be used in construction classes to make shopping bags.

Still, metrosexuality did not really sit well among men. Except for the urban male who had embraced metrosexuality without question, the regular American male who drives a truck, an SUV even a sports car did not see themselves as metrosexuals. They just saw themselves as men.
Their heroes remain to be sports stars from Kobe Bryant to Andre Agassi, yet though the appeal of sports heroes are universal, they are not really worshipped because they are fashion plates. They are admired because of their game play.
Perhaps, that is the key to men’s fashion. Unlike women who admires great dressers like Nicole Kidman and Angelina Jolie, men in general could not be bothered what Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise are wearing because they are expected to look good.

How to get dressed: wearing colour

One of the most interesting – and maddening – aspects of style is its utter elusiveness. It is terribly difficult to define. It could be Lauren Hutton in her sleek, minimalist layers and blowy, streaky blonde hair, or it could be Carla Bruni-Sarkozy in what, even on her, came dangerously close to a parody of Sixties First Lady chic. It could be Daphne Guinness in a medley of couture, ethnic and sex shop treasures. It is nearly always inimitable.
But if I have uncovered anything, it is that to be truly stylish, as distinct from the more conventional chic, or the much less elevated “well-dressed” or the even more humble “smart”, there needs to be an element of surprise.

This is a summer of colour – or it’s meant to be. What I think that means is that if you’re not one for monochrome, now is your time. From cobalt to midnight blue, lemon to jade, coral to purple, there is so much lovely colour around, as opposed to the times when everything is fuchsia or sewage coloured. I don’t think any of it should be worn head to toe, and probably, for most of us, it shouldn’t be worn in the clashing combinations that look so dramatic on the catwalk but look like a multiple pile-up of Hello! shoots in real life.
If you want to use colour to enhance your shape, then the most effective plan is to keep dark colours to your bottom half – or whichever areas you want to diminish. Fabric is another consideration – satin is one of those catwalk delusions that doesn’t generally translate into reality, especially in emerald green.

The canny approach is to go for jolts of colour – a lining, a belt, a print. As for the best colour – the more unusual the better, as long as it suits you. Layering T-shirts is a good plan – a startling colour beneath a toning or contrasting one so that an intriguing flash is all that’s seen is an easy way to experiment. Clashing colours can be fabulous, but unless you’re tall, ensure that the colour breaks are vertical rather than horizontal.
Moderation also applies to accessories. If an orange dress makes you look like a corpse, chances are that orange sandals will too. Almost every stylish woman I’ve met takes risks with colour.

"As a result, companies like Target, Kohl's, J.C. Penney and Macy's are going after designer and other branded products to meet that demand, and the volume can be very enticing to the designers."
Indeed. Premier designers including Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney and Roberto Cavalli have exhibited bargain-priced versions of their costly couture on the racks of über-hip H&M, a Swedish clothing company known for its inexpensive, fashionable clothing.

"A great fashion designer develops a great name among the wealthy for being unique and exclusive, but the reality is that that doesn't bring in the high number of absolute dollars and, very often, the margin that being a mass marketer can bring," adds Pedraza.
Consequently, designer-retail collaborations will likely prevail, he says.
"You can't be all things to all people," says Pedraza. "You have to serve somebody — in this case, the wealthy or the mass consumer."

Toronto fashion week woos the wealthy

As the global economy threatens to grind into a recession and the Canadian dollar takes its biggest plunge since 1962, the runways at Toronto's L'Oréal Fashion Week revealed little sympathy.
Over four days this week 35 fashion designers presented fall/winter 2008 collections, many of them based on themes uniquely relevant to the recession-proof, rich and famous.
Apart from the sensibility, many of the collections looked profoundly expensive.
Toronto veteran designer Joeffer Caoc showed budget-busting ostrich feather skirts with handknit sweaters and sheared beaver toppers.
While the majority of the shows were held in a massive white tent complex at Nathan Phillips Square, the Greta Constantine show was held at Circa nightclub. The line, designed by Project Runway Canada contestant Stephen Wong and business partner Kirk Pickersgill, was clearly aimed at the idle rich, the Aspen set perhaps, with shimmering white gowns accented with rustic deer horn accessories. Pickersgill estimates the sheath dresses will eventually sell at retail for $2,500.
Remarkably, even new, unseasoned designers are commanding as much as $10,000 for an evening gown and $3,000 for a cocktail dress.
A handful of new Canadian fashion and lifestyle magazines were launched this week, apparently unfazed by news that the economy may be tanking. One in particular from Toronto's Kontent Group launches today and is an unapologetic grab for designer brand dollars.
