Indian designers on global ramp of fame

India’s not just shining, but it’s outshining! At least, in the dazzling world of fashion.
Lately, our designers have been getting international acclaim for their revolutionary fashion work from here, there and everywhere. Like Rohit Verma, who was lately seen playing himself in Fashion, being rated the Best Designer at the Asian Style Awards in London — a celebration of Britain’s South East-Asian fashion and beauty industry. And Rahul Mishra who, in the Netherlands, won the International Designer contest of the International Apparel Federation at Maastricht. Last season (Spring-Summer ’09) of the Gitanjali-sponsored Lakme Fashion Week, Anupama Dayal got selected for the prestigious Tranoi Fair in Paris by Tranoi owner, Michael Hadida himself. Also, Sabyasachi Mukherjee came back clicking his heels from the New York Fashion Week where he was invited for the third time in a row. People there called him the ‘Spectacled Designer from India’, whose models sported an intellectual, global look on the ramp by all wearing spectacles. Renowned fashion writer Suzy Menkes interviewed the Bengali designer four times in a short span, which, in fashion circles, is an honour by itself. Rocky S is another Indian designer who was overwhelmed by the international attention he received at Rock Fashion in New York. Rocky had dressed the Pussycat Dolls in elegant and flowy Indian drapes for the red carpet ceremony. Then Delhi-based designer Vineet Behl was the ‘Young Designer’ from India to feature in the 15th anniversary celebrations of a popular fashion magazine in Taiwan. He was chosen from among 15 other talents across the world. While fashion designers Anand Kabra, Anuj Sharma, Nachiket Barve, Nikasha Tawadey, Narendra Kumar Ahmed and Rakesh Agarvwal were selected to represent India at The Coterie in New York. It’s a win-win situation all the way. Indian designers are happy with the international recognition and the world of fashion is excited to be getting the nascent Indian fashion industry to be part of global celebrations.
